One Mile dye study

One Mile Dye Study is a blanket developed over a year through the collection of natural dyes sourced within one mile of my home. Most materials were gathered from local trees, with rosemary taken from my garden. Species include hawthorn, willow, alder, birch, and oak galls.

Yarn was dyed using these materials, with tonal variation developed through iron modifiers and successive exhaust dye baths, producing a range of muted and layered hues. The blanket design is composed of simple colour blocks, arranged in response to the value and temperature of each dye, exploring how these local materials can be paired to form balanced and shifting colour relationships.

Although the chalky quality of the colours is most likely due to the way the dye reacts with the specific lambswool used, I like the association with the chalky, lime-rich soils of the South Downs.
